From planting seedlings to empowering communities โ our work spans conservation, livelihoods, and environmental education.
MOKICFA's activities are organised around six core areas, each carried out by dedicated user groups from across Mombasa County.
We plant native mangrove species โ primarily Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal โ in degraded coastal zones. Sites are selected based on zonation studies and GPS mapping, ensuring the right species are planted in the right locations.
Community beekeeping groups operate within and around the mangrove forests, producing honey while providing important pollination services. This sustainable livelihood reduces pressure on the forest by offering alternative income sources.
Our fisherfolk user groups work alongside forest management teams to ensure sustainable fishing practices that protect mangrove root systems. Healthy mangroves are healthy fish nurseries โ our members understand this connection deeply.
Dedicated mangrove seedling producer groups cultivate and maintain nurseries supplying both local planting campaigns and partner organisations. This creates consistent seedling supply for restoration and income for nursery workers.
MOKICFA eco-tourism user groups offer guided tours through the mangrove forests, providing visitors with educational experiences while generating community income. Tourism creates economic value from conservation, incentivising protection.
Working with KFS officers, we conduct regular GPS mapping and monitoring of planting sites. This data informs management decisions, tracks seedling survival rates, and provides accountability reporting to partners and funders.
MOKICFA is made up of over 20 community-based organisations and user groups, each with a distinct role in forest management and livelihoods.
Operating in Majaoni and Mkupe/Dongo Kundu/Miritini areas, these groups produce mangrove honey and provide forest pollination services while earning sustainable incomes.
Active at all planting sites, fisherfolk user groups advocate for and practice sustainable fishing methods that protect mangrove ecosystems and the fish nurseries they support.
These groups grow and maintain mangrove seedling nurseries at Majaoni, Mkupe, and Likoni/Mtongwe โ supplying quality planting stock for all restoration campaigns.
Based in Majaoni, this group offers guided coastal and forest tours, building conservation awareness among visitors and generating income for the local community.
Community patrol teams monitor the mangrove forests for illegal harvesting, encroachment, and other threats, reporting to KFS and MOKICFA management for coordinated responses.
These groups focus on the broader coastal zone, managing the transition areas between mangrove forests and settlements to reduce human pressure on core forest areas.
Everything MOKICFA does is built around the principle that local communities are the most effective long-term custodians of their natural resources.
We hold preparatory meetings at each planting site before any activity begins. We work with existing community structures. We ensure benefits flow back to the households most dependent on the forest.
Before each planting exercise, MOKICFA:
